Thank you for this piece.
I thought that all government schools irrespective of the mission that founded them are now being governed by the respective state governments. If this is so, then the use of hijab cuts across those schools too.
However, if the founding missions of schools still have a say over their governance, the government should release a statement to that effect so that parents would be guided accordingly.
I attended a Catholic-founded school in Ibadan, St. Louis and we did not have these issues as we accommodated both major religions.
By the way, the hijab is a simple piece of clothing over the head of girls. It does not in any way alter the "sanctity" of the school uniform. Most times, these hijabs are made of the same fabrics and colours as the school uniform.
So, what's the fuss?
Dear Rev., while I appreciate and share your concerns about peaceful running of schools without which learning can not take place, I think that we should also try to accommodate the concerns of others that have been seen to align to their faith. The hijab is not an invention or something that came about last year, decade or century. It is a fundamental part of the Muslim faith and I implore you to support the use of hijab in schools in our quest to foster quality education in an harmonious environment as we teach the younger generation religious tolerance as a path to sustainable development.
Peace,
Mujidah.
