In my previous post, I discussed the three elements of sustainability — economic, social and environmental- and how to do an on-the-spot assessment of our businesses along these three lines.
This takes us to the ways we can build a sustainable business — profit, while ensuring the environment and society are well taken care of.
- Build your business on your core values: Every business should have a set of principles guiding its operations. For a business to stand the test of time, it should be built on the ideals and values of the ones who conceived the idea. That way, they would be able to stay true to their vision irrespective of what come their way (especially unethical practices)
- Stand still and embrace change: While it is not advisable to be hasty in making business decisions, there has to be a balance in terms of knowing when to act fast and when to study the trends. Currently, COVID-19 is changing the conventional business gae and this is not the time for any business to snooze, the ley here is changing as the situation changes too.
- Focus on creating value: Before money can move from one person to the other, value must be involved. It is the value that creates money. Always target innovations in your line of business, this will make your brand stay relevant and stand the test of time.
- Get out of your comfort zone: Everything you want is outside your comfort zone. Great things also happen outside that zone! Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Develop a great sense of discipline and ensure that you do what is meant to be done, no matter how inconvenient it is for you.
